shipping costs from the US to UK
« on: April 21, 2014, 03:13:40 AM »
I know this subject has been the bone of contention for along while now , but the reason I ask is this ,

there is a big lot of ephemera for sale on a auction site,  as you all probably know, that's my kind of thing !!  it is a huge lot  weighing in about 14 lbs !!   the seller  is wanting $83 in postage , is this  about right ?? or am i being "had"   here ???

your thoughts please ??

JB,

The price sounds about right.

Here are some prices for Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes:

Large: In the USA: $17.45, Overseas, $80.50
Medium: In the USA: $12.35, Overseas, $59.95 (This is an end opening box, not a top opening box) But the price should be the same
Small: In the USA: $5.80, Overseas, $23.95

A lot of US sellers will not ship overseas anymore because of the high costs, but as long as someone is willing to pay the postage then they will ship overseas. Another problem with that is the price of the merchandise may not be worth the time to ship overseas.

I have known folks to lose money on an item just to be able to ship it overseas.

For 14#, flat rate would be the way to go and that price does not seem out there. I am one of the dealers that is willing to ship anywhere, but the buyer is going to pay shipping. I would be willing to lose money for a friend but not ebay. How much of it do you want? You could always have it shipped to me, I will take out what you want and relist the rest. That would reduce your cost a lot.

I checked into an item to go to Belgium.THe jacket would cost $47.95 to ship priority.Insurance is going to be extra.Sadly the costs often prohibit a sale or trade.I use to do a lot of trading with a fellow in england.I could send a 3 foot tall box of shirts to him for less than $50 at one time through UPS shippers.

Plus I often worry about the loss of an item.

We had a topic on USMF where ebay was destroying items they found unacceptable through their shipping rules or handdlers.Insanity....

It's not just international shipping that gets out of hand! I bought a medal at auction for $100, and the seller lives in the same city. He would not meet to give me the Medal, but insisted that he ship it REGISTERED MAIL!!
Guys.....this is a Silver Star in a red case, hell he didn't even know he gave it away at the price I paid!! ::)

Update to this topic..

Unfortunately shipping prices are on the rise but I have found that by consolidating packages and shipping in one large box rather than multiple small boxes, those members overseas can save a little money..

I have been doing this for a member who lives in Great Britain, he buys items from US sellers and then has then shipped to me in the US.. After a few months when he has a box full of items, I box them up for the member, get a shipping price, fill out the customs form and then I send it. I am reimbursed for the full amount that I spend...

I don't mind doing this small favor for a friend overseas...

I keep getting stung by custom charges also plus Royal Mails standard £8 extra charge.
Just bought 2 sets of Captains bars that cost me an extra £12.
I also bought an Ike recently that had a customs charge of £22!!!

Hopefully the prices will rise a bit over the years?? If they don't, I'll be running at a loss😳
