Working on a new exhibit for Bosnia /Kosovo with a twist
« on: December 14, 2020, 11:57:05 PM »
Next year the Michigan Military Heritage Museum will open a new exhibit on the US role in the Bosnia and Kosovo conflicts of the 1990s and 2000s. As usual we will feature the Michigan connections of which some are very important. SSG Christopher Stone was a POW of the Serbs and he hails from Capac Michigan. Camp Bondsteel was named for MoH recipient James Bondsteel who was from Jackson County MI where we are located, and it was named by an Army LTC from our town of Grass Lake, so these will also feature prominently in the exhibit.
Perhaps something a bit different, but directly attributed to the Bosnian portion of these conflicts was the founding of the band Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Yes, they came about because of an album released under the name of the founding members band Savatage out of Florida. The album called "Dead Winter Dead" is a concept album set in Sarajevo and one of the tracks is called "Christmas Eve Sarajevo". You most likely know it and most likely as a TSO song that went 6 times platinum and is played at every store at Christmas time... Yet it really is a song about war.
We are partnering with members of Savatage/TSO on this exhibit as singer Zak Stevens has a Summer home just down the road from the museum. He is excited for the project as are we. Much of the TSO stuff has a connection to the military and they raise a lot of money for military families on their massive Christmas tours, sadly none this year except a pay per view from them... So, while not part of the Bosnian war, here is Zak doing a song called "Chance" about the WWII Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara who saved many Jews on Lithuania. This too is a Savatage song done by TSO.    Scott

Here is the link for "Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24" from a live show with the TSO Bosnian intro. The original Savatage story is much darker and really captures what was happening in Bosnia in the 90s.   Scott
