Very Rare RAAF Early WWII Pilot Wing Prior to RAAF WWII Design
« on: September 14, 2018, 11:00:30 AM »
Good afternoon Gentlemen and Lady collectors! I wanted to present to you today a rarely seen wing which was produced very early in the genesis of World War II. Prior to the Royal Australian Air Force developing a standard by which they would construct their pilot wings, they adopted the RAF standard for very short time. The RAAF pilots who flew, probably with RAF squadrons in the early war, either wore the RAF wing itself or in deference to their home nation had RAAF wings constructed according to the following design. I am relatively early in my British and Commonwealth collecting years so if any collector or historian bears a clearer picture of the sequence and timing of the advent of these wings which quickly disappeared, please contribute and cast light on anything I am ignorant of. Thanks so much everyone and enjoy the wing!

The first wing I present is the eventual standard the Royal Australian Air Force set upon for their pilot wings. This is a picture of a wing from the most excellent site Flying Tigers Antiques by our intrepid collector and historian dealer Ron Burkey.

The wing has a very strong and tight padding within and as you can see this wing was most certainly worn....
