WWI Era Helmet - US or something else???
« on: June 12, 2017, 09:50:14 AM »
Hi,
Does anyone know whether this is a US helmet?
It could be a home defense helmet or a rare variant.  Just not sure.
If not, I am guessing Brittish?

The issue I see with it is that US helmets had leather chinstraps.
I know Brits used cloth chinstraps during WWII but they were rubbery not like these.
Also what is the significance of a huge white circle on the helmet???

The split rivets indicate that it is a British made helmet...any visible stampings under the rim? The chinstrap is definitely non-standard...probably jury-rigged by a previous user or collector?

Hi Ian.
No markings that I can see in the photos that I was provided.
I also wonder about the big white circle.
I talked to Eric (MasonK) and we speculated that it may be civilian use.
I assume the chinstrap must be an added addition then.

That would be my assumption too.

I'm thinking civil defense or even police use. Definitely not worth the asking price you mentioned, Mark.
