I remember seeing a post on another forum about a widow selling her husband's medals after WW1. It was published in a period newspaper when she sold them. Seems there was value even then seen in military medals.

Not one city official will have the heart to return the medal to the family. This is not private ownership, it's public ownership I believe for the story. Being public, this matter should be resolved in the families favor.
