Guadalcanal USMC combat dog tags
« on: May 20, 2016, 08:11:22 AM »
Another recent acquisition for me, I'm always in search of Guadalcanal USMC dog tags.

James J. Kelly served as a 60mm mortar crewman with M Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. He landed on Guadalcanal on November 4, 1942 and served in combat action against Japanese forces there until February 8th, 1943. I should note that these tags are of later issue to Kelly, well after Guadalcanal.

Contact was made with Kelly's daughter, who stated that she believed her father suffered from PTSD resulting in witnessing a friends death on Guadalcanal. He did not serve in combat again during WWII, having transferred stateside where he served in various training units as a mortar and rifle NCO.
