Dog tag to a KIA USS Indianapolis sailor
« on: May 13, 2016, 07:58:50 AM »
This is probably my most historic tag to date, and my most recent purchase.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Philip Arthur McGuirk graduated from Midshipmen's school on June 16, 1943. After receiving further training at Pacific Fleet schools at Pearl Harbor, he returned to the Midshipmen's school as an instructor, serving there for 19 months. He then served on the USS Indianapolis, and was killed (lost at sea), on July 30, 1945, when the Indianapolis was struck by two torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58. The Indy sunk within 12 minutes, with 300 of her crew going down with the ship. The remaining 896 men spent 4 days in the water of the South Pacific, rapidly succumbing to exposure, salt water poisoning, suicide, and shark attacks. Of the 896 who did not go down with the ship, only 317 were ultimately rescued 4 days later when spotted by a PBY Catalina flying overhead. McGuirk was 25 years old.
