The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 3d Coast Artillery Regiment on 8 January 1925. It was redesignated for the 3d Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion on 13 March 1950. The insignia was cancelled on 16 November 1959. It was restored and authorized effective 1 September 1971, for the 3d Air Defense Artillery Regiment.
