Type A-6 / A-1 flying boots...or "Return of Bigfoot"!
« on: April 05, 2014, 09:38:55 AM »
Carl / littlebuddy and I have done a bit of good ol' fashioned horse-trading involving footwear recently!  Here for your delectation and delight are some examples of USAAF / USAF flying boots. Firstly, the WW2 Type A-6s. These comprised of insulated rubber "galosh" style bottoms with shearling uppers and were made large as they were designed to be worn over service shoes. In practice, the A-6s proved to be prone to coming off when airmen bailed out. Thus, they were modified by the addition of two straps across the instep and ankle to better secure them. Initially, this was done retrospectively to production A-6 boots, as seen here. Later examples which left the factory with the straps already attached were designated A-6As.  The same basic boots remained in use into the early 50s after the formation of the USAF. The design was essentially similar but featured improved non-slip rubber soles which were cleated, unlike the WW2 types which had soles like tennis shoes.

Side by side. Slight differences in the molded rubber bottoms.

Note the nomenclature of the A1 boot shown in the previous image ,it was classed as an  " overshoe "   where as the A6 was classed as "boot ,flying, winter "

Took delivery of these the other week, a good cheap find on Ebay . Notice the difference in the label compared to the ones Tom E Gunn has shown .

Labelled as Type A6 but again with the addition of the ankle and foot straps .
I need to get my new pair cleaned and treated ! :o

Very nice examples...typical crazing of the lacquered finish...mine show similar wear.

Carl...a friend gave me a restoration tip for flaking shearling finishes. Rub in some neat *Burnt Sienna artists' acrylic straight from the tube in a circular motion with the tip of your finger, wiping off any excess as you go along. I've tried it...it works.

* (I think that was the colour...a dark reddish brown. I'll need to check the labelling on my tube.)
