A plethora of parachutes!
« on: January 30, 2016, 10:15:44 PM »
As some of you know, several months ago I came into possession of several chutes, packs and harnesses. These ranged from WWII through Vietnam and were in a variety of disassembled conditions. So, what does one do? They are bulky, heavy, and hard to display when they fall everywhere... I contacted the local skydiving club, and asked if they had a rigger on staff? They did, but alas he was a young civilian with no idea on how old military gear worked. But........wait for it......He was willing to give it a go if I was willing to wait while he researched and learned by trial and error. Needless to say, I decided to wait and here are the fruits of his research and my patience.  Scott

First up a Korean War era pilots chute with full harness.  Scott

There are more including a couple of duplicates, so no point in posting, and two that remain to be packed. The local club is moving to a newer facility so the rigging room is temporarily being used for storage. One of the remaining chutes is a beautiful WWII B-8 with harness!
We also had an issue of too many bags and harnesses and not enough actual chutes when all of the parts were sorted. So, of those shown above, 2 are actual complete rigs, and 2 are filled with packing peanuts so they can be displayed on torso's or mannequins. Can you guess which ones? When they are laid out you just can't tell. The only way is by the weight. The answer in a few days, lets have some fun!   Scott

I have also listed an extra harness for sale on the USMF. It is a 1960 dated complete harness and I will throw in a back pad for $75.00 or best offer.  Scott

The B8 will be returned to the Yankee Air Museum when its re-packed. They gave me all of these and more free of charge. As much as I would love to add the B8 to my museum, I feel it right to at least disclose the value to Yankee. After all, it is a big part of what they do. If they decline, then its mine free and clear. Not to worry Carl, I am sure that I will get more as they continue to "cull the herd". After all, its my Father in Law that does the culling! ;) Oh, yes, it is complete, just needs to be re-packed. Its dated 45 and a real beauty. I will take a pic of it in its current condition tomorrow.      Scott.
