WWII 82nd Airborne Division dog tag
« on: December 23, 2015, 06:42:30 PM »
Hi all, hope the holidays are treating you well and find you and your families happy and healthy.

Thought I'd show off my latest goodie added to the dog tag collection, my very first to an Airborne soldier. Major Loughmiller appears to have served throughout all of the 82nd AB campaigns in WWII, and his gravestone shows him as being with a field artillery unit. Based on my research so far, it appears that would've been with the 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion. Looks like they suffered some horrendous losses from glider crashes during the invasion alone. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I am. I'll certainly be ordering his personnel file ;D

Good luck with the research. I hope you will find a lot of information..

Not sure if the 82nd unit history has information, as I do not have a copy of it yet, but it may be a place to look..

He may of been assigned to any number of the Artillery units organic to the 82nd in WWII

319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion (M3 105mm Howitzer in Italy / M1A1 "Pack" 75mm in Normandy, Holland & thru to VE Day)
320th Glider Field Artillery Battalion (M3 105mm Howitzer in Italy / M1A1 "Pack" 75mm in Normandy, Holland & thru to VE Day)
376th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion (M1A1 "Pack" 75mm)
456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion (M1A1 "Pack" 75mm)

If he was awarded a medal for valor (DSC, SS, BSM), theres a good chance that his name would be on a roster, for the award, by organization

Hope this helps & good luck!

Thanks for that, Chris. Believe it or not I've been having trouble nailing down any history behind specific units within the 82nd. I assumed they'd be pretty simple to research given the fame of the Division. While based on his gravestone I do see he was awarded the Purple Heart, that's about it as far as I know so far. I'll update you guys once his file (if it still exists) comes in.
