Flight Helmet
« on: November 16, 2015, 06:57:42 PM »
I recently acquired this RAF C Helmet (Type 2), which to me was obviously used by a US pilot. Affixed to the front is a Lion with what appears to be "Stars & Stripes" wings.  The Lion also has a crown and his chest bears what appears to be the flag of England, with a red cross and white background. (not the Union Jack of Great Britain)  I know that this is the proverbial "shot in the dark"  but has anyone ever seen this before?  Been on there a very long time as the leather has started to deteriorate around the figure in the exact shape.  Symbol of allied cooperation? Thoughts? Even your wildest guess would be appreciated.

Very interesting Paul. Not sure about "the cross of England" ( Cross of St George) though, which is actually red against a white background. That cross outlined with white on the lion's chest doesn't actually look like it...unless it's an "artistic" interpretation?!

This is "John Bull"...our equivalent of your "Uncle Sam"...note his waistcoat (vest)  Could be that your lion is meant to emulate this?
