Carl,

This sweater is identified as a V neck sweater in Ken Lewis' book Doughboy to GI on page 103. "Judging by the darker shade of OD, this sweater would be late war. In a plain machine-knit with ribbed waist and cuffs. The V around the neck is an additional piece machine sewn to the body. This style of sweater is listed in a USAAF catalogue as a mechanic's sweater type A" Ken Lewis..

Looks like you find another sleeper for your AAF collection.. Good job..

So , if it is a USAAF type A sweater , does that mean I have shelled out big bucks for another one when I already had one ??  ???

May have to look specifically in the AAF catalog for a better explanation. As it is not my area of knowledge I just looked in the logical place in WW2 uniforms..

Will continue to help ya brother and hopefully can get a solid confirmation as to what it really is with some provenance.

Smitty , this is a scan from my AAF CLASS 13 CATALOG  ,by all means it looks like the same sweater , but obviously the label does not read the same order and spec #'s

Carl,

Great to have the reference book. The only thing I can say is that many of the QM tags did not have the specific names such as mechanics sweater.. I think someone labeled it that way and the name stuck..

I will continue my research and see if there is some positive proof. Perhaps an email to the Quartermaster Museum may shed some more information..

Stay tuned...

Philip Knitting Mills, New York, NY, had several contracts for wool sweaters that amounted to over $2.5 million.  Contract W669 QM23250 for $246k November 1942-March 1943.  This was an Army Quartermaster contract and from the label the sweaters were made per a QMC specification.  There is no indication this was an Army Air Corps specific item and was apparently general issue to any unit authorized them in the ToE.
