USAAF :JACKETS ,WINTER FLYING (PARKAS )
« on: April 01, 2014, 11:41:59 AM »
After spending many hours trawling through a certain online auction site , I have seen many supposedly  "WW2 B9  and WW2 B11 " Flight Parkas !

Some have even come up for discussion on other forums   , So I thought id post a few pics of both of my examples (hope they are 100% original now !!)    to help out with any reference  for those who are looking to get one or are unsure of their example

If I have got something wrong , which is quite easy for me to do so  ,  please do correct anything I have said

 Well here goes

Jacket ,flying winter ,Type B9   original cost in 1943  $20

 Note  the  knitted cuffs

Now the   Jacket ,Flying Winter  Type B11     cost in 1943   $12 , a significant reduction in price against the B9

Note the wrist adjusters , the B9 having the knitted wrists and the B11 have just the buckle and strap arrangement

B11 Contd
Again the difference in the linings between the two jackets ,   The quilted lining of the B9 to the Alpaca lining of the B11

The predecessor to these 2 "PARKAS"  is the B7 shearling model , I know there is a certain member who has a beautiful example of such a jacket and the TYPE A6 pants  to go with it

So if member "PROPWASH"  reads this post ,would you mind posting some pics of both items ???

i figured i would post these up here as well for posterity. Here is the B7 parka.  I believe you have the entire parka set on here now, the B7, B9 & B11
Always on the lookout for USAAF flight gear and anything pertaining to the Aleutians Campaign.

What is the classification on the N2 and N3 Ian ??  Are they classed the same way as the B7 B9 B11 ,  JACKET FLYING WINTER ??

I lived in a N3B for years.  Maybe I can dig up some pictures.  A N3B was a staple in Wy, ND and Alaska.  I wore mine with chinese underware at -40F.  At that temp I could feel the cold seeping in.

Wow! That's a nice, clean, minty-looking example Carl! Is it in your size? These parkas were widely surplussed post-war as they were very practical winter garments. Consequently, surviving examples are often worn out / soiled...that one appears to be in exceptional shape. Hope you can seal the deal!

What we need to remember Ian is that the B11 PARKA was actually supposed to have been worn over the B15 set up , so if it was to worn on its own , it would have to be a pretty small size to fit me nicely .
The example i have shown is a size 40    so that would fit potentially a 44/46 !!
