The Navy League awards a set of wings to the top graduate of each Aviator class. I believe it is still done to this day. I believe this set of wings dates to around the 60s. They are made by Bastian Brothers and are pretty high quality. These wings are somewhat scarce, but I would not call them rare. Just a cool variation in the USN wings.

Yep,
Definitely a merit award. Forgot to mention that these wings have the short posts and could easily date to the 1950s. I have also seen these wings with the pin-back version.

Top Gun is a post graduate course, rather like our QWI, QHTI course etc.....

I think these are given to overall best student on graduation and would include, flying ability, academics etc. Certainly an award that won't harm your career.

Cheers
Paul
