Khaki Twill on Black Chevrons
« on: May 21, 2015, 11:13:48 AM »
I know these were worn Pre to Early War period. Now to find a SSG and 1SG.

Were they authorized long enough to be made for the Tech ranks? I have never seen any but that doesn't mean they are not out there...

Is it black backing...or very dark blue?

It is black. These were worn in the 30s to early 40s. From what I can figure, the Tech ranks came out after these were authorized.

They do exist...Tech 4 chevron I picked up on eBay last week. I paid a little more than I usually do for a single chevron but this is the first one I have come across...

I prefer to collect matched pairs ( don't we all?) but I have been known to pick up singles just to have an example of another variant!

I agree, pairs are better. But in this case, a single is fine.

Thats a very rare Tech applique khaki bar on blue twill chevron there DR.

The one's that I have not seen, the specialist applique bars  style dates from 1936-1942.

With the overhaul of the Specialist to Tech Ranks about the same time as the applique were rescinded your one stands out.

I'm hoping there are specialist applique khaki chevrons out there, however I have not seen any

A very good pick up indeed.

Here are my ones.

DS

I saw those from kmcoll , passed on them nice pick up. 1920-1942 First Sgt is rare, I was lucky to get that.

Just a note these are Khaki bars applique to Blue cotton twill. They were all dye cut and as per pic sewn onto the cotton twill.

I have always liked this and the OD bars applique on Dark Blue wool/felt.

I missed out on a 1st Sgt... the seller listed it three times but the auction ended at odd times and I just flat forgot to bid once. The third time was not the charm for me.  :'(

As a side note, according to William Emerson "The style with twill bars sewn onto the dark twill was never prescribed but during the WW II buildup (1940) and early in the war, the demand was so great for chevrons that this design came into use. ... There is a good chance for the 3 rocker version of the 1st Sgt chevron to exist, but since the government did not have a specification for this construction style, it is impossible to be certain."

Anything possible DS

I've always thought that 3rd rocker was stopped just before they introduced the new chevron ranking however with the Tech rank thats thrown that idea out the window!!

Good luck , keep us informed if you do come across any odd ball chevrons.
