salute to you, L/Cpl Leakey. having read the article, could someone from the UK please explain to me what is a Gentleman Usher of The Black Rod? this is a term applied to one of his relatives, which i have not heard before.

Ron...The Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, generally shortened to Black Rod, is an official in the parliaments of several Commonwealth countries. The position originates in the House of Lords of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. He wears ceremonial garb and carries a staff of office...the black rod.

In Canada he's known as The Black Rod of the Senate.
