Great Grandfather and NASA
« on: January 25, 2015, 04:03:04 PM »
Here are a couple of official NASA 8x10 photo's of my maternal Great Grandfather Harry Brazzell. As you can see Harry was a cook on a recovery vessel in the 60s and 70s. My Grandmother once told me that Harry had committed a crime here in Detroit and fled to Texas. We know that he served prison time at the state prison here in Michigan but I am not sure of the nature of the crimes. He was an underling of the Purple Gang and generally not a pleasant man until his later years. As a child I visited him several times before he passed and he gave me these pictures after taking me to visit the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Only in America can you go from criminal to working for NASA, just like Von Braun! Harry is first row far left.  Scott

Here is Harry serving a pie to three of the recovered astronauts. I don't know who they are and I suspect that this was just a capsule test but can't say for sure. Scott.

Very cool.  It was great to be a kid during the space race.

Great to have a direct family link with such an auspicious and iconic organization as NASA!

Scott.  I can't find any pictures of the men in the flight suits, on any of the lists of astronauts.  They might be in some support role.
