Troop Carrier Glider Pilots jacket
« on: November 19, 2014, 02:17:32 AM »
You may have seen this posted on another forum. I have the opportunity to purchade this Glider Pilots Brit made jacket. There is some mothing on it but I don't have a Glider Pilots uniform in my collection and I do quite like it. However, the Air Medal awards compared to the campaign stars on the ETO ribbon is ringing my alarm bell as it doesn't tally up.

Any thoughts?

Neil...here's my take on it. It's a British-made officer's blouse, with British-made patches...possibly the Glider wing too? It has original W/O insignia and a nice Troop Carrier DUI. The ribbon bar is "period appropriate" despite your anxieties. So my answer would be... "Find another".  If the price is right, bite the seller's hand off! Re the ribbon bar, at the end of the day, there are very few uniform collectors, myself included, who have not replaced a missing ribbon bar. I always try to do it "sympathetically"...and as accurately as possible, using only period items in a plausible combination. Missing appurtenances can always be replaced. I don't see that as being a problem, and it certainly wouldn't prevent me from buying the uniform.

I saw your little purchase Ian. Nice set of GP wings. Very envious.

With regards to the jacket. I have no alarm bells ringing with regards to the jacket itself, just the ribbon bar and the amount of oak leaves compared to the campaign stars.

It is named and there are five possible Glider Pilot hits. The seller will check the jacket and garrison cap in the coming days to see if there is a serial or laundry number so that we can confirm the identity.

Re the ribbon bar...GIs back then were not necessarily as "picky" as we collectors are today! I have ribbon bars with their ribbons out of synch...upside down even...or perhaps even missing one which you would normally expect to be there. Doesn't mean they don't belong. Also, bear in mind that many vets dug out their old uniforms and wore them on Veterans' Days for years after the war, often adding to or modifying the insignia for parade wear. Then there's the family. You know the kind of thing...finding "Grampaw's old medals and badges" in the drawer and pinning them on, often incorrectly. It happens. Collectors need to take all of these things into consideration and not get too "paranoid" about minor details! Just saying.  ;)
