Thank you all for your comments, reading the letters and articles really brings this group home. The feeling of the parents loss comes through vividly.

Another stunning group-talk about complete. Thanks for posting and keeping this brave sailor's memory alive. They were so close yet so far...truly a tragic epic in the history of the USN.

Outstanding and rare group!

Many years ago I found a PH document in its original mailing tube in an antique store and I think I paid $15 for it. It was for someone KIA on the Indianapolis and I could never find anything about the recipient as they were not on the crew list. I didn't pursue it after coming up empty handed and ended up selling the document sometime later. I saw the guy I sold it to a couple of months later and he told me the recipient was one of the civilian workers assigned to the atomic bomb and was to record results after they dropped it on Hiroshima. He was KIA as a result of the sinking and was awarded the PH as a result. The baffling thing is why would a civilian be awarded a military medal unless the government felt he and any other civilian workers should be entitled to something.

Thanks for bringing this back up, Robin.  That's an amazing group...so sad that in only two weeks the war would have been over for him.
