General Eisenhower Waste Paper Drive Medal
« on: March 26, 2014, 02:32:38 PM »
This medal and certificate were awarded to my father during World War Two. He and his Boy Scout troop collected newspapers for the scrap drives. My dad was ten years old in 1944.

A beautiful example of why Boy Scouts have a place in US Militaria! Thanks for sharing Smitty and I have to say I have not seen one before.

There was also a General MacArthur Victory Garden medal for helping with food production.

My Father was not awarded this particular medal, but he does have one in his collection.

All this goes unseen by the collecting fraternity I suppose ??   but we all forget what these organizations did for the war effort ,both sides of the Atlantic !

I was just recently home as most of you know celebrating my fathers 80th birthday. He gave me a book with some pictures and one of the photos that I had never seen was my dad and his brother pushing a sled piled high with newspapers for the scrap drive. I will add it to this post later on..

Awesome medal, especially since it was awarded to your father. I've never seen one before.

I can only echo that the Scouts played a pivotal role in the war effort during both wars. I was in the scouts for 10 years and have a small collection of BSA items. Some my own, some my grandfathers (both), and other items obtained in groupings of men who served. I hope to put them all in a display one day.

In any case, thanks for sharing, Smitty, and I look forward to seeing the photo of your father!

Can't wait to see the photo Smitty!

Eric, feel to add your bits of BSA items in a thread. I still have some more to dig out, never a scout but still support the orginzation and hope my boys will join.

As promised here is a picture of my father (on the pile of papers) with his brother during the waste paper drive in World War Two. They were eligible for the Waste Paper Drive Eisenhower Medal after collecting 1000 pounds of papers..

Way to Go Dad!!!
