The resurrection of John Fox's Medal Group.
« on: March 24, 2014, 06:43:52 PM »
I purchased this Medal Group a month ago, and I am currently in the process of restoring it. As can be seen by the discoloring of the metal, the group was damaged in a fire. As can be seen, all items except the planchets have been lost, so I am on a "scavenger hunt" for replacement pieces.

To begin the restoring process, I cleaned the Medals with water and a mild detergent. Then I attached them to wire hooks and fixed them to a cloth hanger....now for mother nature to do the work. In order to add a patina to the Medals, I have placed them outside to expose them to the elements.I have no idea if this will work, or how long this may take, but in the meantime, I will look for the other pieces necessary to complete the work to once again let this group regain its place as remembrance to Coal Passer Fox.

I certainly will, Chris! As the aging process occurs, I will take more pictures of the stages. Also, if any members can find pieces, I will be very interested in purchasing them!!

Hello R!

This will be VERY valuable information for us all, please keep us updated with pics and comments as to this project's progress. It's a wonderful group, I'm sure the honored Veteran would be very pleased to see the work you've put in to the restoration of his medals.

Thanks for sharing with us!

Robin,

Very interesting process you are doing. Do you have pictures of the medals before you cleaned them?

Kay, they looked very much the same when I received them. Someone had already cleaned them up a bit, I can only imagine what kind of damage was done. I hope to report in the coming months, that the burnt appearance is disappearing.

I recieved the 201 File from Golden Arrow Research today. Geoff did a hell of a job finding this record. He spent over three months going through records of ther common name FOX, until he found this. Turns out that the sailor's S/N had been changed over the years from his initial number, to his CSC number.

Here are the pages that have to do with his Medal Numbers, and Issue paperwork.
