Also with the photo  came another letter , written on the 321st Fs  letterhead ,  which i think is a real cool squadron patch !!

The letter  has some good narrative on the back side of the letter , regarding his first flight in a P47 !!

Are you talking about period ribbons Carl, or a representative fresh set made to order? His ribbons are common enough...I have a box of assorted spare ribbons myself. However, I note that he was entitled to various "appurtenances" (ie the small bronze stars) for multiple awards of some ribbons...for example, the Air Medal. The ribbon itself is too small to accommodate six stars so a silver device representing 5 x bronze stars would be worn instead. I actually have a medal rack on a VN gunship pilot's uniform who was awarded no less than 59 Air Medals! In such cases small enamelled numerals are attached to the ribbon instead. Various online dealers offer ribbon services and can supply spare appurtenances.

Carl,

Great read once again. I failed to realize the first time around that the letters are on the V-mail stationary BEFORE they were reduced in size. Normally I would find V-mail letters in the small envelops and much smaller print. These appear to be full size. Great job..

Let me know what ribbons and devices you need. I may have a bunch sitting around and will send it in the next package.

Ian is correct regarding the Air Medal, however I do want to point out that numbers were not used on WWII ribbons. This was adopted/used later, especially when helicopters became more prevalent, opening up the opportunity to be awarded into the double, sometimes triple digits with respect to the Air Medal.

There are online ribbon rack builders that can be helpful in giving you a visual representation of how the ribbons should appear. The only caveat, is you have to be careful as order of precedence has changed since WWII. For Example, the Purple Heart now takes precedence over the Air Medal, whereas during WWII, it was the reverse.

Here is one that I use:

https://www.ezrackbuilder.com/rack-builder/home

For this Airmen's ribbons, I would construct the ribbon rack as so (including order):

Row 1
Air Medal w/1 silver Oak Leaf Cluster, 1 bronze Oak Leaf Cluster

Row 2
Purple Heart
Army Good Conduct
EAME w/3 bronze Battle (Campaign) Stars

Yes Eric...I should have clarified the fact that the Air Medal numerals were a post-war innovation. Thanks!

Many thanks guys for all the help and offers ,great to know im among friends who are willing to help out  :)

Just to clarify one thing regarding the ribbon rack . Were the racks limited to 3 ribbons  in a row then starting again with another row of 3 ribbons ?

LB,,

I believe 3 was always the authorized number of ribbons per row. I have seen 4 per row but not sure when this may have changed. I know the higher up the ladder so to speak, the ribbons could be staggered so they were not hidden under the lapel..

I have just managed to source this original 514th fighter squadron patch to go along with this group.
This is my first "original" squadron patch .So I'm really pleased with how it's all come together

Really good how you've put a the pieces together.
Like that Squadron patch also

Interesting comments on the medal bars guys. These are a minefield for a US newbie like me.
