Debated about this going in displays or field gear and decided it was best appropriate here.

Most of you know I was an infantryman in the US Army for 21 years. One of the better duty assignments I had was in Berlin with 6th Battalion 502nd Infantry Regiment (Strike). I held numerous positions in Berlin as a Team Leader, M60 machinegunner, M249 SAW gunner and ultimately a Squad leader. One of the daily duties was to ensure equipment and clothing was combat ready and serviceable all the time. We constantly had alerts and was always ready to move out into combat positions. Inspections of field gear and equipment ensured combat readiness. Here are some shots of my combat load and gear that I carried. All the gear and weapons are my personal items..

These are just some general shots of the gear and equipment carried in the rucksack and duffel bag. There is also another post that I did that shows the Load Bearing Equipment suspenders..

Fabulous layout...great to see all the individual items like that! ( I'd take the LAWs.  Then, if any muzzo comes near me or mine I'd guarantee him a warm welcome and he'd meet Allah sooner than he planned!)

Smitty, any chronic back problems as a result?

Was in a helicopter crash early in my career, summer 1986.. Had some compressed discs from that and a fractured neck after I got out of the military and became a firefighter. I am broken but still functioning. Would probably say I am functioning at around 85-90 percent of what I used to...

I do have a good disability from the Veterans Administration and medical retirement pay from the Fire Department, as well as military retirement and city pension, so I'm holding my own...

That's a neat display! It is very similar to the gear we used when I was in from 1990 to 1993, we used the same LBE, also the big rucksack, but we called it "Bergen" as the LU Army had been set up by the Seppos at the end of WWII. We also used the LAW, the same BDUs, complete with M65 field jacket and liner. We didn't have the PASGT but still an old M1 steel pot and the ECWCS Goretex rain jacket was not issued but  we were allowed to wear it as private purchase, but onlyafter the three months of induction. It was a kind of a "pilgrimage", straight after we had been sworn in, everybody made it to the military store in Baumholder to buy the Goretex jacket! We didn't use the "Pig" or teh M16 though, we had the Fabrique Nationale's MAG58, the Brits call it GPMG, and the FAL. A few years later the FAL was replaced by the Steyr AUG.

when i look back on that pile, and compare it to when i was 11B in 1969, it's obvious you guys are carrying a lot more than we did. then i look at today's guys, and they have added even more. when does it stop? "the mobility of a nation" is an interesting read on this topic. an infantryman must be more than a pack mule.
