Title: Eileen Younghusband, WAAF, 1921 - 2016
Post by: Tom E. Gunn on September 17, 2016, 01:55:36 AM
Sadly, another direct link with the past has passed away...and what a link!  Eileen Younghusband was a near neighbour of mine and a "friend" of our museum.  She was one of the few survivors who could still truly claim to have been there during the Battle of Britain. As a young WAAF officer she worked in the top-secret "filter room" monitoring the incoming Luftwaffe raids and and passing this info on to the Ops Room so that our fighter defences could be best deployed to meet the threat.  In her later years wrote a book about her wartime experiences and became a familiar face on our tv screens as she was often called upon to participate in tv documentaries about The Battle of Britain.

She used to come and give talks at our museum...indeed, she was meant to have joined us on September 3rd then on the evening of September 2nd we received the sad news that she had passed away after a brief illness.  She was a larger than life character and I will always remember the many fascinating conversations I had with her.

I and several of my museum colleagues will be attending her funeral on Monday.  :'(
