"Wartime Weekend 2016"...pic heavy!
« on: September 05, 2016, 01:49:05 AM »
On Sept 3-4, we at the Barry At War Museum hosted our annual "Wartime Weekend" (for the benefit of our non-British members, Barry is Wales' largest town, situated on the South Wales coast)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry,_Vale_of_Glamorgan

Our museum is housed in a section of the old Barry Island, Great Western Railway station house...a substantial, turn-of-the-century, red-brick building. Our mission statement is to inform, educate...and indeed entertain the good people of Barry about their town's wartime history. We are self-funded, with money being raised by public subscriptions / donations, plus the odd cheque or two from the local town council and supportive local businesses. Fortunately, the space we occupy within the building is rent-free!

Anyway, each year we host what we call our "Wartime Weekend"...a chance for like minded folks to enjoy getting together to exhibit their collections and to interact with the public. This year there was a full programme of events over the two days. Apart from the displays of militaria and the presence of various reenactors, we had some military vehicles, a 105mm gun, courtesy of the Royal Artillery, 40s style music via a female "chanteuse" and a ladies' choir...plus some "Lindy-hoppers" who really cut a proverbial rug, American style!

We also set up what we called "The Ops Room"...a mini-cinema if you will...where invited local military historians and vets did audio-visual presentations throughout the day, ranging from The Battle of Britain...the D-Day Landings...the Arctic convoys and The Battle of The Somme!

One of the highlights was the fashion show...a multi period display but focusing primarily on the 40s. All of the costumes are period originals from the collection of one of our members. They were suitably modelled by some young ladies and were escorted by some of our uniformed members.

Each day began and ended a flag-raising / lowering ceremony properly conducted by a Royal British Legion Flag Marshal. The Welsh, Union and Merchant Navy flags were flown, the latter in honour of Barry's history as a major seaport in time of war. The opening was attended by local dignitaries and politicians. The only "down side" was the weather on day one! The UK was lashed by the tail end of a storm from the Atlantic, but fortunately it was a largely indoor event. Thankfully, by day two the storm had subsided!

Overall, as we reflect upon it, the weekend went well and we consider it to have been a success with plenty of visitors attending and plenty for them to see and do. Of course, there are some things we'd change if we repeat it again next year, but that's for a later date!

Below is a varied selection of pics which I hope will convey the flavour (flavor?!) of the event. Thanks for looking!

Ian

Ian, good work, good displays, looks like you all had a good time! Although I'm not too much into 1940's civilian clothing, the ladies looked nice too.  ;)

Thanks Pat...yeah, we did. As for the girls in 40s clothing, I suppose you'd prefer them out of it then?  ;)  :D
