Sergeant S.L. Phillips, #265442, Welsh Regiment, WW1.
« on: March 22, 2014, 09:19:18 AM »
I thought I'd share my late grandfather's WW1 medals with you. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1956 when I was just three years old so I never really got to know him. In fact, it wasn't until after my parents passed away that I discovered his medals when clearing out their house. I immediately set about finding out what I could about his service, and had the medals professionally mounted in a shadow box. I contacted the British records office but was unable to find out very much beyond his basic enlistment and discharge. I do know that he was a member of the Territorial Force ( Britain's Reserve Army) and was called to the colours after the outbreak of WW1. Being a Welshman, he served with The Welsh Regiment on the Western Front, thankfully surviving the war unscathed...physically, at least.

The trio of medals comprises of the War Medal, World War One Victory Medal....and the Territorial Force Medal (yellow/green ribbon) This medal is highly sought among collectors because only 34,000 were issued...a drop in the ocean compared with the hundreds of thousands of other medals which were issued. In the British style, his name, rank and serial # are engraved around the circumference of each medal. The cap badge bears the motto "Ich Dien"...actually German for "I serve". The motto and three feathers are taken from the heraldic device of The Prince of Wales.

BTW...I should have mentioned that I couldn't photograph the medals' flip-sides because they are fixed to the backing board.

OH, Tom E. Those are very special medals indeed. You have them tastefully mounted and framed, and I assume they are on display in your home. NICE! :D

Thanks gentlemen. Not coming from a "military" family as such, this is a link with our past that I'm very proud to have been able to preserve and will of course pass on to my own son after my days.
