Scully proceeded to the Tank Depot and Central School at Bovington Camp in Dorset. By November he was made A/Cpl. and one month later A/Sgt. Before he could be confirmed in either rank, on 16 February 1919 he fell victim to the influenza pandemic that killed more people than the Great War. He was returned to Canada on compassionate grounds and was discharged on 25 April.

Of significant note, Vincent Scully was the son of William Scully. The firm of William Scully Ltd. earned a special place in Canadian military history by becoming the first firm to produce regulation headdress and badges in Canada. It was established in 1877 as a military outfitter in Toronto acting as an agent for several British manufactures of uniform headwear, badges and buttons, including J.R. Gaunt. In 1906 the company received approval from the Canadian Ministry of Militia and Defence accept military contracts and began manufacturing in Montreal in 1908.

Some will die in hot pursuit and fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit while sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain.....
