8th Jacket on Ebay
« on: July 24, 2016, 04:02:19 AM »
Hello

As some of you are aware, I'm new to the US items so appreciate your help.

I'm looking at this uniform on US Ebay. Seems OK to me but I may not be looking in the right places.

Any red flags with anyone???

Appreciate your input

Lee

It looks a good original jacket with some nice insignia on it Lee , the bidding might go silly on it if anybody has done their homework on the original owner .
I would be on it in a flash if i had stumbled across it , but ill leave the pathway clear for you if you are going to bid on it  :)

Hi Lee.

Jacket looks just fine to me, in fact per his Air Medal it appears he did his full compliment of 35 missions.  A very lucky man.  However there is another interesting thing to note about this jacket.  This gentleman flew in the 306th BG.  This is the bomb group that the mythical 918th BG in 12 O'Clock High was modeled after.  The 306th was the original 8th AF "Hardluck" group, until taken over by General Frank Armstrong. Gregory Peck's character, "General Savage" is in reality General Armstrong.  You may notice the 918 is exactly 3 times the number 306.  Thought you might like to know the additional connection that goes with this uniform

That is a nice jacket, but the same seller also has a British made Ike jacket named to the same officer. Although it doesn't have the ribbons and may never have had any ribbons I like the Ike better, just an opinion. Either way nice uniforms.

Bugger, just missed out on it. I went to $385.
The British made short jacket went for $232 which seems like a good price.

Oh well, still looking for an 8th patched four pocket then

Thanks for the additional info on this chaps, much appreciated and really nice to see we have such knowledgeable members.

Regards

Lee

Lee...you'll find that most any US item which is "British made" sells quickly and at a premium because for collectors...especially Americans...it means that the item in question was "over there"!. Between us both, Carl and I have quite a number of such items...uniforms, wing badges, cloth insignia, field equipment etc. Here are some examples from my collection...including a Welsh-made one!

Carl...I was thinking primarily of your British-made patches and wings. I think you sold your British-made ETO jacket, did you not?

Spot on Ian, and if you don't mind me adding the fact that if an individual had the means he could go to Savile Row and have one of the finest uniforms made by bespoke tailors. The quality of these uniforms is second to none and that's what really drew my attention to these uniforms.
Also, sorry you didn't get either jacket. Like what was stated earlier another will be along soon.

The Savile Row uniforms are really cool... I used to own a Savile four pocket that belonged to a flight surgeon.  Everything that could be bullion was bullion, except for the 1st AF patch showing his service after he came home.  Had a breathtaking pair of bullion flight surgeon's wings, too.  THe patina on them gave them sort of a gold-pink glow, really cool, but alas, I felt like I wanted a Japanese NCO sword more...
