Nice. Lee...is that heavily tarnished black/gold officers' piping...or black? If black, it's a chaplain's cap...much more scarce.

It's very dark gold, almost a bronze colour.
I'll try and get a better pic at the weekend to confirm.

Would have been "glittery" when new. The piping usually contained a shiny metallic gold thread which will tarnish over time. Also, I have examples where the "gold" in the piping is non-metallic...rather it's a gold-coloured silk or rayon thread intertwined with the black. ( I actually have 70+ garrison caps of all types / branches of service, officers' and mens'. There was quite a bit of variation within the basic regulations)

Re the above, this example from my collection has the gold rayon thread interwoven with the black.

BTW Lee...re the piping on your garrison cap, if you turn back its "curtain", the ends of the piping tape which have been protected from the effects of sunlight etc., should give you an indication of how it looked when new.

I looked at the inside piping to see if it was lighter and it wasn't. It's just this dull gold/bronze throughout.

Looks like a "subdued" officer braid. The example I posted above doesn't "glitter" like the metallic threaded versions, but the contrast between the black / gold is slighty more apparent than on yours.

Ian , is there any other BOS braid that it might be ?  is there any others that use black ??

Couple more, I think it's just a darker variation of officer

Yes...I think that's probably the case Lee. I've got a couple of "pink" officers' garrison caps with similar "muted" black/gold braid...shows up better against the "pink" rather than dark OD.

Maybe with it being an English made example , that the braid isnt as "bright"  as the US made ?
