USAAF B1 summer flying cap
« on: January 03, 2016, 08:15:28 AM »
Following on from my original thread about the B1 flying cap ,and also after my concerns on another B1 which was part of a "group" supposedly coming from a "REDTAIL" veteran that was posted on another forum , that i got really  frustrated over .

Anyway  the cap i originally posted

If you take a look again !

Looks a good colour  and the "wear" looks ok

Headband has a good amount of "age" to it as well

So !!!!  , the frightening thing on this piece ???

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Scary isnt it ??  imagine if the label had just been worn or torn enough  as so not to see the maker name !!  somebody would have been in a hole

Ah-ha! Just as I said in the other thread....it could be a well-distressed Eastman! That's the problem collectors face these days...the ever increasing quality and accuracy of repros! At least Gary has the good grace to attach his own labels...others do not! That said, any label can become "detached"...if you know what I mean?!

Not about becoming detached Ian , these " quality reproduction " companies probably don't realise how hard they are going to make it for  the NEWBIE collector in the next 20 -30 years . By then ,some of the original USAAF gear we collect will be well over 100 years old . And at this moment in time , that B1 looks like a 70 year old vet !

So i do hope,  that books like Mathieu Bianchi has written on the subject matter , are constantly updated with any new relevant information.

Hey Carl,

Here are a few photos of my B-1 Cap.  Just a note, as you can see with this cap and other originals I have seen they have tendency to have had their bills creased/folded in the middle to give them an inverted V appearance.

That's a fine example. In all of the years I've been collecting aviation items, a decent B1 cap has always eluded me! Might the crease have been formed due to the cap having been folded to fit into a pocket?

Hi Ian,

Almost certainly so that it would fit into a pocket.  Spot on as usual.

Late to the show  and thanks for a good topic LB.

That Eastman is scary good but before I saw the lable my little voice was starting to chirp about the fabric may just not be right. The age on it is amazing.Totally agree if the lable wasnt there it would be a real is it or is it not. Thanks for posting.

Thank you Ron , as Ian mentioned in a previous post , at least EASTMANS have the good grace to add there own label . Im a little loathed to get rid of my Eastmans example , just so i have reference example to compare against
