Pilot Officer Noel R. Truman D.F.C.
« on: March 28, 2014, 06:30:51 PM »
This group belonging to Pilot Officer Noel R. Truman who was a Flight Engineer with with the Lancaster equipped No. 625 Squadron. Medals include his cased Distinguished Flying Cross dated 1944 on the lower arm and five place medal bar: Reproduction DFC; 193945 Star; Aircrew Europe Star with France and Germany clasp; Defense Medal and British War Medal. A separate pair of ribbon bars accompanies the medals. Also included is an embroidered Engineer wing with black backing; Bomber Command blazer patch; two snapshots of his Lancaster crews; two Navigator and Air Gunner's Flying Log Books chronicling Truman's flight history; three copies of Pilot's Notes (one general, one for York Cl and the third for Lancaster's); fabric backed map of IPC pipeline and RAF routes; three engineer log pages (only one filled out for a flight in a York Cl); and a large file of photocopied records pertinent to Truman's military service

The recommendation for his DFC included testaments from his Wing Commander who stated, "His skill in the handling of the engines and in all the duties assigned to a Flight Engineer have proved of the greatest assistance to his Captain...On the night of March 15, 1944, when attacking Stuttgart, the aircraft was intercepted by an ME 410 which was damaged and probably destroyed by the guns of the aircraft, and the skill and cooperation of Pilot Officer Truman helped materially in making the work of his Captain as easy as possible; and so probably destroying the enemy aircraft."

Accompanying the group are two WWI medals presented to Truman's father, Pvt. Cecil Truman, Royal Marines who was taken prisoner in during the Battle of Canal du Nord in 1918:  Victory Medal impressed, "PLY 1500SPTE. C. TRUMAN. RMLI" and 191420War Medal impressed the same.

I had the pleasure to talk with Pilot Officer Truman's nephew who mane I found in a British Forum when I Goggled the Pilot Officers name.
