Balfour Glider Pilot wings....sometimes you just get lucky!
« on: October 22, 2014, 01:03:11 AM »
As any wings collector will tell you, WW2 USAAF Glider Pilots' wings are among the most sought after and hard to come by. So, you can imagine my surprise and delight when a pair recently turned up at the antiques market no more than two miles from where I live! Not only that, they were also by a great maker...LGB / Balfour!  They weren't cheap (such wings never are!) but I secured them after a little friendly "horse-trading"!  They are used...the slightly bent pin attests to that fact. They were actually very tarnished...quite black really...which IMHO detracted from their overall appearance. So, I buffed them lightly with a soft cloth which just served to catch the high-spots and snapped out the details. They look all the better for it!

That is a great find. I live out here in "MarineLand", aka Oceanside, California and you would think there's a wealth of stuff. . . not even! What few things I have found, are current uniform items. So great catch.

F-102, I am up the coast from you in the Central Valley and I have to agree. People are getting smart and things do not go to or stay in second hand shops anymore. I remember when things were pluntyful and cheap when I lived in San Diego. Nice find Tom!  ;D

It's all the more sweet because I'm outside of the USA! Such wings don't exactly grow on on trees over here either!  ;)

I'm getting very keen on acquiring a set of Glider Pilots wings. It's going to be a hard hit on the wallet.
