3rd ID helmets w/ tac marks
« on: May 23, 2017, 11:08:55 PM »
I came across these photos on the net. They show troops of the 3rd ID embarking for "Operation Dragoon", the invasion of Southern France, August '44. What caught my eye was the playing card style tac marks applied to the rear of their helmets. The application of the famous blue/white striped divisional patch to the sides of their helmets was pretty much universal ( I actually have an original example) but I'd never previously seen them with such tac marks. Perhaps they were peculiar to this operation?

Hi Phil...only just read your post...I've been away on vacation. Thanks for the info...that's a superb example you have there ( though super-size on my screen!)

Phil,

This is a wonderful looking helmet. I like the tactical markings. We are usually accustomed to seeing the deck of card symbols on Airborne helmets, so it is nice to see other units utilizing those designs..
