Official Unveiling of World Trade Center Artifact Display
« on: September 11, 2015, 11:49:45 AM »
Today, September 11, 2015 was the official unveiling of a permanent display of an artifact that took me 5 years to aquire for the United States Army Sergeant's Major Academy, Fort Bliss, Texas.

As a retired infantryman and retired firefighter/medic this was a project that I took on 5 years ago when I worked as an digital command post instructor at the academy. I took on this project for several reasons; To remember my fallen brother and sister first responders, and to pay tribute to our military who have sacrificed much over these past 14 years. We must never forget what happened on September 11, 2001 in New York City, at the Pentagon and in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. That day will be remembered as my generations "pearl harbor" when America was suddenly attacked. We were introduced to new words such as Taliban, Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden for the first time, and these new words would forever be in our vocabulary.

The artifact that I was able to aquire is a mounting bracket from the Koenig Sphere, which was the gold colored globe that sat in the plaze between the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. It sustained heavy damage when the towers collapased. It was moved to Battery Park a few blocks from the WTC site/memorial.

These are pictures of the artifact when I recieved it last October and when I have a chance I will also post pictures of the permanent display that was constructed over the last several months and unveiled this morning in a very somber Patriot's Day ceremony attended by the Staff, Faculty and Students of the United States Army Sergeant's Major Academy. My wife and I were the guests of honor of this unveiling.

I did this not for personal gain or attention, but as a reminder for all what has been sacrificed by so many.

I hope that this display reminds us all that we are a resilient and resourceful nation.

Thank you and God Bless the First Responders, our Military and spouses and children, the families and victims of the attacks and the United States of America.

My then 15 year old son and I were scheduled to fly from the UK to NYC for a short vacation in October 2001. On 9/11 I was in my classroom with my students when my cellphone rang...something which never usually happened! It was my son. He said, "Dad, there's been a plane crash in NYC...it's breaking news on tv now!" So, I switched on the tv and the students and I watched the unfolding events in a stunned silence. Fast forward > Obviously things were quite tense in the wake of 9/11 and there was all sorts of conflicting advice about international travel. We were scheduled to fly with American Airlines. Knowing that their security would be watertight I thought " F*** it! I'm not letting those bearded b******s decide what I can and can't do!" So, we flew to NYC just about a month after 9/11. The World Trade Center was still smoking. There was a fine grey dust everywhere in the city. We took the cruise around Lower Manhattan and got as close as it was possible to get to Ground Zero. I'll always remember the scene of devastation...and the huge defiant American flag on one of the damaged buildings. Later that week we witnessed a funeral with full honors for a fallen firefighter. I returned to NYC in 2011 with my wife. We took a helicopter flight over Manhattan which flew as close to the Freedom Tower and Memorial Garden as is permitted...so, I'd witnessed both the destruction and re-birth. One thing's for sure...those muslim b******s will NEVER triumph over the spirit and forces of freedom and democracy, though they might hurt us along the way. God Bless America at this time of sad reflection of that day of days.

9/11 was my youngest daughter's birthday.  She turned 12 that day.  The comment she made that day has always stuck with me.

"Dad, can I ever be happy on my birthday again?"
